I picked up my fiddle a couple of times in the past week. On the way to pick up Alli for Easter, I listened to some music which could be, or already was, played as chamber music. My immediate thought was how great it would be to round up a few old string players of "my" time, and just read through some quartets and /or whatnot. If I were to do that, I would need to get back in better playing shape - increase my sight-reading skills and speed. Only way to do that is to pick up the instrument. Why let my limited free time discourage me, correct? Besides, playing the violin is great for building upper body strength.
My eyes don't like this either. How many strengths of reading glasses could one person possibly need? One for numbers, one for computers and crochet, one for reading music on a music stand -at least that many. And then the stand light doesn't provide much light, so I may need to replace it with a brighter one.
It's a good feeling, though, to be able to pick up the instrument and play well in tune after warming up. The next step is to get the bows re-haired so that the bow arm can get smoother.
In other news, the tape from 1982 that I had converted to a CD has become a hit in the Alzheimer's wing at Clarewood. They use it to calm the residents. It seems to have become a "found" ministry.
I'm glad you're picking up your violin more! I liked hearing it while I was home. Memories of childhood!
