We have managed to arrive at the 4th of July weekend - this year with the day itself falling on a Sunday. This leads to complications.
Sunday's are about worshipping, and worship for me is about singing, and singing leads to choir to special music for the holiday. And glorious music it will be. Patriotic, but in a faith setting, with orchestra to add color, and sweeping melodies that get thoroughly stuck in one's head. Bring on the Saturday rehearsal, followed by two performances on Sunday morning.
Grab a quick bite of lunch, and scurry over to Bayou Bend to "pulse" the footbridge for the 4th of July Celebration. This is really one of my favorite events. Yes, it is hot and humid, but that is Houston in the summer. Here is the reading of theDeclaration of Independence, the fife and drum corps, the music, the marches, the birthday cake, and 9 acres of room for guests to walk and run and escape from the pressures of the hoard crowding in for the fireworks in downtown. And where else can you go and sign your name there along with Jefferson and Franklin and friends?
How does one "pulse" a footbridge? Well, when confronted with lesser hoards of people, but a narrow footbridge across a bayou, one must allow only 30 guests at a time to cross, giving them time to find their footing on the bouncingly responsive suspension device and make their ways cautiously to the other side. It's just the kind thing to do for those who have not yet learned the bridge "shuffle" gait that keeps the walkway steady.
However, considering the amount of rain that we've had in the past week, thanks to the first hurricane of the season, we may need a ferry rather than a bridge...
